At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference this week, Apple announced the winners of its 2023 Apple Design Awards. Each year, the tech giant recognizes a dozen apps and games across six categories: Inclusivity, Delight and Fun, Interaction, Social Impact, Visuals and Graphics, and Innovation.
Winners of the Apple Design Awards
The winners were chosen from 36 finalists in the following categories:
Inclusivity
- App: Universe
- Game: Stitch
Universe, a website builder developed by Brooklyn-based company, allows users to choose a domain and set up shop in minutes. Stitch, a game created by Thailand-based Lykke Studio, lets users virtually embroider different designs.
Delight and Fun
- App: Duolingo
- Game: Afterplace
Duolingo, a popular language learning app, won the award for the app section of this category. Afterplace, a vintage pixel adventure game developed by U.S.-based developer Evan Kice, took the award for the game section.
Interaction
- App: Flighty
- Game: Railbound
Flighty, an app that provides users with detailed flight maps, airport navigation, and delay forecasting, won in this category. Railbound, a track-bending puzzle game developed by Poland-based Afterburn, about a pair of dogs on a train journey around the world, took the award for the game section.
Social Impact
- App: Headspace
- Game: Ending
Headspace, a popular mindfulness app, won in this category. Ending, a side-scroller game developed by Germany-based company, where players navigate a land charred by environmental disaster and human impact, took the award for the best game.
Visuals and Graphics
- App: Any Distance
- Game: Resident Evil Village
Any Distance, a U.S.-based design-forward workout tracker, won in this category. Resident Evil Village, developed by Capcom, took the award for the best game.
Innovation
- App: SwingVision
- Game: Marvel Snap
SwingVision, an AI-powered tennis coach app, won in this category. Marvel Snap, a game with an innovative ‘snap’ mechanic that introduces whole new layers of strategy to the game, took the award for the best game.
