In a bold move, Microsoft has announced that it will spend an impressive $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 to build data centers designed to handle artificial intelligence workloads. Breakdown of Investment: Over Half in the United States
While $80 billion is a significant allocation, it’s worth noting that more than half of this amount will be spent in the United States. Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith emphasized the importance of investing in data centers within the US, citing the country’s potential to lead the AI wave.
"As we look into the future, it’s clear that artificial intelligence is poised to become a world-changing GPT," Smith wrote. "AI promises to drive innovation and boost productivity in every sector of the economy… The United States is poised to stand at the forefront of this new technology wave, especially if it doubles down on its strengths and effectively partners internationally."
A Brief History: Microsoft’s Growing Interest in AI
Microsoft’s interest in artificial intelligence has been growing steadily over the years. In April 2024, the company was reportedly in talks with OpenAI regarding the construction of a data center facility that would contain an AI supercomputer dubbed Stargate. The estimated cost for this project was over $100 billion.
However, Microsoft later referred to OpenAI as a "competitor" in an SEC filing, highlighting the competitive landscape surrounding AI research and development. This move underscores the growing importance of AI in the tech industry and the need for companies like Microsoft to invest heavily in data centers that can support AI workloads.
